Inclusion of Roma: key role for SMEs and improving housing conditions

MEP Lívia Járóka, Chair of the EPP Group's Working Group on Roma Inclusion held talks yesterday with Dimitar Ivanov, executive director of the SME Union Bulgaria about the role of small and medium enterprises in fostering Roma employment. Later the day Járóka met thirty mayors from Romania, where she drew attention to recent amendments to the European Regional Development Fund's regulation which allows for supporting housing subventions in favour of marginalized communities within the EU.

Integration of minorities: Lívia Járóka MEP receives Romanian excellence award

Romanian Foreign Minister, Teodor Baconschi, has granted the Ministry's excellence award to Lívia Járóka MEP, acknowledging her activity dedicated to the social integration of minorities. In her acceptance speech, Járóka said that granting the award to her was a message that fostering the social inclusion of the Roma was one of the most staggering strategic challenges and at the same time one of the most promising opportunities for Europe.

"It is with great sadness and sorrow that I learned of the serious ecological catastrophe which occurred in western Hungary, causing the deaths of four people, injuring more than 100 and endangering thousands. The flora and fauna of the region is also in great danger. I would like to send my solidarity to all Hungarian citizens affected by this enormous catastrophe", said Joseph Daul, Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament.

The Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee of the European Parliament held an extraordinary meeting yesterday (Wednesday) on the situation of Roma people in Europe with the participation of Commissioners Reding, Malmström and Andor. Regarding the Commission's decision to launch infringement procedures against several countries in case of non-compliance with the EU's Directive on free movement, Lívia Járóka MEP welcomed the settlement of the issue and urged the stakeholders to focus on developing a Community response to remedy the terrible poverty from which the Roma are trying to escape when they migrate.

Tamás Deutsch MEP held a Hearing in the Budgetary Control Committee of the European Parliament yesterday where he called for a broad legislative programme to protect the European Union's and it's citizens' financial interests. There are two legislative dossiers on the protection of the EU's financial interests which have been blocked by the Council, the first for six years, the second for nine years. The Hearing's aim was to find a way to move on with these dossiers, as both of them are serving the basic interests of the Community, stepping up against fraud, money laundering and corruption and making investigation more simple and quick.
