“Unfortunately, seeing the opinion polls and the campaign, one could anticipate the result of the referendum rejecting the EU-Ukraine agreement. Even so, this is an enormous disappointment for the ethnic Hungarians of Subcarpathia and also for Ukrainians hoping to get closer to the European Union. The referendum sends a very bad political message to Ukraine: don’t expect help. The Hungarian government provides significant support to the Hungarians of Subcarpathia. However, it seems as if only migrants coming from every corner of the world enjoy the benefits of European solidarity and fewer and fewer remain sensitive to the hard situation of the neighboring country right next door. I hope that the Dutch Parliament, after a second debate on the agreement, brings about a rational decision and decides for the ratification of the Association Agreement,” said MEP Andrea Bocskor on the result of the referendum.
