The European defence industry must be revitalised

2023. 07. 13.

The European Parliament adopted a proposal to support the production of ammunition in its plenary session on Thursday. We believe that only a European Union with strong defence capabilities can meet the growing security challenges. We therefore support the strengthening of the defence industry and infrastructure, which have been weakened by irresponsible left-liberal policies, and the acceleration of ammunition production as part of this.

MEP Kinga Gál said that the escalation of the war in Ukraine has highlighted the shortcomings of the common military defence capabilities and the need to strengthen the defence industry. “Only a European Union with globally advanced and competitive defence reserves can cope with the increasing challenges”, the Fidesz MEP stressed. She added that Hungary supports the strengthening of the European defence infrastructure, including the acceleration of ammunition production, but it continues to not participate in arms and ammunition deliveries to Ukraine. “We are committed to ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, which requires a ceasefire and peace negotiations as soon as possible in order to achieve a lasting peace”, the politician underlined.

According to MEP András Gyürk, the fact that the decision was taken so quickly is a step forward. “In the context of the war raging in our neighbourhood, it is essential that the European defence industry is able to produce sufficient quantities of artillery ammunition on a continuous and safe basis to protect our citizens. The swift adoption of this legislation is also an admission of the complete failure of the left-liberal defence policy of dismantling the defence industry. These capacities are needed and the new rules could also help the Hungarian ammunition industry”, the Fidesz MEP pointed out.
