The results of the Eurofins research clearly shows that ingredients in the imported honey that contains the mixed honey products pose a significant risk. “The Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) test shows the atypical spectrum of the inspected honey and reveals that the product contains added sugar," the report says. "We diagnose that the inspected honey is not in accordance with the description of ingredients shown on the bottle.”
This fraud has not only deceived the consumers and ignored the food safety regulations of the EU, but could also lead to the decrease of the amount of honey produced in the internal market. “Even some apiary farms that are still competitive today could go bankrupt. Hungarian and European people could lose their livelihood, which we must stop from happening,” said MEP Erdős. That’s the reason Czech, Bulgarian, Slovenian, Polish and Hungarian apiary farmers were demonstrating in Brussels recently.
“It also turned out that many abuse the loose provisions of the 2011 directive on informing consumers regarding food products and exploit the use of the label that indicates a “mixture of honeys from the EU and outside the EU," the EPP MEP pointed out, adding that this was the reason he initiated the re-evaluation of the decree. The label should clearly indicate the country of origin of the added honey and the percentage that the final product includes.
