Poorer Member States shall not pay for climate neutrality

2019. 12. 18.

Press Release by MEP Edina Tóth

The European Parliament held a debate on the conclusions of the European Council meeting on the 12-13 December. In her intervention, Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth welcomed the agreement of Member States of the European Union on reaching climate neutrality by 2050, however, she pointed out that certain fundamental basic principles should be laid down before taking the next steps.

The EPP Group politician pointed out that the most polluting multinational companies and countries should pay the cost of climate neutrality instead of the citizens. She stressed that EU rules should not result in the rise of energy, food and fuel prices. Cohesion funds should not be taken away from poorer Member States since cutting costs would further increase regional inequalities in the EU. In addition, respect for the principle of technological neutrality is essential for reducing CO2 emission.

“Hungary is showing its firm commitment to climate protection not only in words, but also in deeds; it has reduced CO2 emission by 32% since 1990″, stressed MEP Edina Tóth in closing.
