Europe is the most peaceful region in the world

2019. 06. 21.

Global Peace Index (GPI) ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness.

The GPI covers 99.7 percent of the world’s population, measuring peacefulness according to three factors: the level of social safety and security; the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict; and the degree of militarization.

The 2019 GPI report finds that the average level of global peacefulness improved very slightly this year, the first time the index has improved in five years. According to the key findings the Middle East and North African region remained the world’s least peaceful region.

Europe remains the most peaceful region in the world, and it recorded a very slight improvement in peacefulness after several years of deterioration. Twenty-two of the 36 European countries recorded improvements on the 2019 GPI.

Iceland remains the safest country. Hungary was ranked in 21st place, one of the highest placed countries in Europe, coming ahead of Germany, Italy, UK, France and other EU Member States.

The least safe is Afghanistan, with Russia also falling into the unsafe category.
