Commission’s contract with Altus: clarification needed

2015. 05. 07.

A consortium headed by Altus Zrt. was awarded an EU contract to provide strategic analysis on the use of EU funds by Member States.

Altus is widely known by the Hungarian public as the company of socialist former PM Ferenc Gyurcsány. It is also known as a company that has largely benefited from obscure privatisation deals in the 1990's, as well as for many questionable contracts awarded by the government while Mr. Gyurcsány was Prime Minister (2004-2009).

According to statements made by the Commission, the contract was awarded in October 2014 to the consortium headed by Altus. Knowing the direct link between Altus and Mr. Gyurcsány, the European Commission is asked to make every document related to the contract public as well as information related to the decision-making process. All questions regarding the Commission's neutrality in matters of domestic party politics need to be resolved. Even the slightest suspicion of party financing in the transaction or party political bias in the analysis used or carried out by the Commission would irreversibly damage the European Commission's credibility as the guardian of the Treaties.

The Hungarian delegation of the EPP Group has submitted several written questions to the European Commission that need to be answered without delay.

The first set of written questions submitted are available here:
