European Citizens’ Initiative Needs to Live up to Expectations

A Report on the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI), drafted by EPP Group MEP György Schöpflin, received the unanimous support of the European Parliament's Committee on Constitutional Affairs today. György Schöpflin said: "The idea is that citizens are empowered to launch legislation initiatives and are thereby able to participate in European-level politics with greater intensity than hitherto. However, after over three years in operation, various obstacles to the effective functioning of the ECI have been encountered."

Securing the Schengen Area

The Hungarian parliament passed new legislation this week to give the Hungarian military policing powers so that they may provide much needed help to the regular police force in the effort to manage the influx of migrants and attempts at forcible and illegal entry into Hungary and the Schengen Area. While some media outlets reported that the Hungarian military can now shoot at will, in fact the military has been empowered to use non-lethal arms to control every situation with proportional means.
