“It is a completely wrong approach to disguise debates on political and moral issues as legal debates and to call for all kinds of procedures and sanctions against those who defend traditional values. Brussels must stop aggressively spreading radical left-wing ideology, which destroys the possibilities for cooperation between Member States”, said Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi during the debate on the Commission’s annual report on the rule of law in Strasbourg.
According to MEP Balázs Hidvéghi, the “rule of law circus” that has been going on in Brussels for years is based on false principles. “Issues such as life, death, family, marriage and education are rooted in millennia-old norms. They are also closely linked to religious beliefs and people’s relationship with the supernatural”, said the MEP. He added that “it is obvious that these are sensitive and often divisive issues. However, it is absolutely clear that it is not the role of the European Parliament to make decisions on such moral issues”, said MEP Balázs Hidvéghi.
The MEP underlined that it is a wrong approach to disguise political and moral debates as legal debates and to attack those who defend traditional values. Brussels must respect that there may be different opinions in different Member States and that it is the sovereign right of Member States to decide on these issues in accordance with national constitutions and identities. “Brussels must stop aggressively promoting radical left-wing ideas that are destroying Europe”, the MEP pointed out.
