We say no to the impoverishment of Europe

2022. 05. 25.

The European Parliament (EP) has adopted a resolution on the economic and social consequences of the Russian-Ukrainian war. In the document, the EP’s left-wing majority calls for a halt to all imports of oil, gas and nuclear energy from Russia, to which the response from the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament is a resounding no. “We say no to the impoverishment of Europe and to making the people of Europe and Hungary pay the price of war,” MEP Enikő Győri emphasised after the vote.

The Fidesz MEP stressed: “Even the resolution acknowledges the serious economic and social consequences of these measures: a three per cent economic decline, an increase in social and territorial disparities, the collapse of the social welfare system, and growing poverty. Ignoring all this, the left, from the People’s Party to the Communists, continues to force the embargo on ideological grounds.”

The Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament insists that the aggressor must be condemned, those attacked must be helped, but war must not lead to the destruction of the European, and in turn, the Hungarian economy.

Furthermore, it is outrageous that Parliament would impose the rule of law conditionality on the disbursement of funds to help Ukrainian refugees. It would therefore become arbitrary which Member States receive EU funds for this purpose and which do not. “We are helping from our own resources, and we are not waiting for Brussels,” MEP Tamás Deutsch said.

MEP Győri concluded by saying that “Hungary will continue to provide all assistance to Ukrainian refugees and support the neighbouring country’s application for EU candidate status”.
