We say no to Brussels censorship!

2024. 02. 28.

The European Parliament held a plenary discussion on the proposal for regulating political advertisements, which allows Brussels to censor content during the election campaign and influence its outcome. Regarding the parliamentary debate on the transparency of political advertising activities, Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth emphasized: “This proposal from Brussels limits the sovereignty of Member States. It was created with an undisclosed aim to develop rules giving Brussels the power to define what to talk about in a political campaign, which is a violation of Member States’ competencies. It is outrageous to limit the freedom of expression! We will not give in to Brussels’ stealthy efforts to expand its powers”!

Hungary has severe concerns about the Brussels proposal, as it does not comply with the principle of subsidiarity. This regulation is undoubtedly a political intervention to influence the election rules of the Member States.

MEP Edina Tóth underlined that the proposal is unacceptable because it violates the electoral systems of the Member States. “It’s sad that the vanguards of free opinion are the first to violate freedom of speech, who work day and night to censor opinions they don’t like. What is this if not the suppression of democratic values?” – added the Fidesz MEP.

“It’s time to put an end to political and ideological pressure, and EU institutions should not be allowed to have power over opinions critical of Brussels!” – MEP Edina Tóth concluded her speech.
