We need competitive professional driver’s training

2023. 03. 22.

Members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism discussed today the European Commission’s latest proposal aimed at reforming the rules on driving licenses and traffic safety. Fidesz MEP Andor Deli welcomed the initiative, but he also added that these measures would not be sufficient to deal with the growing driver shortage.

,,The digitization of driving licenses, their issuance, and their exchange is a positive initiative. It is also to be welcomed that young people from the age of 17 can start their training required to obtain a driving license. Despite the positive elements, I think that these proposals will not be sufficient to deal with the growing shortage of professional drivers” said MEP Deli.

“The training of professional drivers will become more complex and expensive as a consequence of the proposals, which may act as discouraging factors for people who are about to choose or change their profession. Furthermore, it also gives drivers from third countries a disproportionate competitive advantage. We need simplified, accessible, and competitive training of professional drivers in order to reverse the drastic shortage of drivers and its consequences that we are already experiencing,” added the MEP.
