We must make the case for a European peace proposal that offers hope for ending the war

In today’s plenary session of the European Parliament, MEPs debated the preparation for the European Council meeting on March 23–24. In his speech, MEP Tamás Deutsch, head of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament, stressed that the EP should use diplomatic means to seek peace instead of supporting sanctions that destroy the economy and risk an escalation into world war. “Instead of arms transfers and further sanctions, we should advocate for a ceasefire, peace negotiations, and the development of a European peace proposal that offers hope for ending the war”, the MEP said.

In his plenary speech, MEP Tamás Deutsch pointed out that “we condemn Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine. This is a violation of international law and morally unjustifiable. We sympathise with the victims of the war in Ukraine”. He added that Hungary has been supporting Ukraine since the beginning of the war and has already taken in more than a million Ukrainian refugees in one of the largest humanitarian operations in Hungarian history.

In his plenary speech, the head of the delegation drew attention to the need for a new approach on the part of the European Union and the European Parliament in dealing with the war in the neighbouring country. “The EU’s policy of sanctions and arms transfers, which are destroying European economies and risking an escalation of world war instead of using the tools of diplomacy, has not led to any results”, he reminded those present.

“Europe must formulate and represent its own interests, rather than serving other interests, to avoid being dragged into war. Instead of arms deliveries and further sanctions, we should stand up for a ceasefire, peace negotiations and the development of a European peace proposal that offers hope for ending the war”, MEP Tamás Deutsch closed his speech.
