We Can Put an End to Nearly Five Years of Human Suffering Through Diplomacy

During its September plenary session, the European Parliament debated support for Ukraine, as the country faces an increasingly grave situation as a result of the horrific war launched by Russia. In her speech, Viktória Ferenc, MEP of Fidesz–KDNP and member of the Patriots for Europe Group, pointed out how the European Union could best help the people of the country, which has been at war for nearly five years: “I am convinced that the Union must pursue a clear objective: to use the power of diplomacy to prevent the war from spreading, to bring the parties closer together, and to ensure that the guns fall silent in Ukraine.”

“As I listen to the debate, I have the feeling that the reality in Ukraine is far removed from these comfortable parliamentary chambers. The war, which has been going on for nearly five years, has plunged the country into mourning: thousands of soldiers and civilians have already lost their lives, including more than 700 children. More than one hundred Hungarian men from Transcarpathia have also become victims of the war. They are gone forever. No power or declaration of solidarity can bring them back,” the MEP of Transcarpathian origin, pointed out.

Viktória Ferenc emphasised: “Meanwhile, in Europe, information booklets are being distributed to tell people what to do in the event of a crisis or armed conflict. This is how it began in Ukraine as well.”

“That is why we bear an enormous responsibility. Behind political decisions are not numbers or statistics, but human lives, whose course we have the power to influence. Because before all political, economic and power considerations, there is something that is more important than anything else: human life,” the MEP concluded her speech.
