The United Nations’ visionary Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted 25 years ago, sets out important objectives for achieving gender equality. Lívia Járóka, Vice-President of the EP drew attention to these in connection with the European Parliament’s resolution adopted today.
“Progress has been made to achieve equality between men and women but the main challenges persist. We want to ensure that a strong, inclusive recovery follows the COVID-19 pandemic, one that results in a more gender-equal society”, emphasized Lívia Járóka in her written statement.
EPP Grioup politician stressed the need to continue to focus on education, training and lifelong learning as essential conditions for enhancing equal opportunities for women and girls, in particular of Roma origin. “We should put emphasis on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as well as on digital skills and Artificial Intelligence”, emphasized MEP Járóka.
Women’s creativity and entrepreneurial potential remains an untapped source of economic growth and jobs. Such initiatives could enhance equal opportunities and potentially result in a €16 billion annual boost to EU GDP.
The EPP Group and the Fidesz-KDNP delegation to the EP stands for equal pay for equal work between men and women. Now, on average, women earn 16% less than men in the EU. “We also support working towards eliminating violence in all its forms. This must be an absolute priority for the EU, Member States and authorities who must do everything in their power to eradicate violence against women, to support victims and to prosecute perpetrators”, pointed out Lívia Járóka.
