Unless Brussels changes direction, crises could bury the EU

2023. 10. 23.

At its plenary session, the European Parliament debated the European Commission’s Work Programme for 2024. Fidesz MEP Enikő Győri pointed out in her plenary speech that “If Brussels does not change direction in these dangerous times, the crises could bury the Union.”

The Hungarian MEP called on the Commission representatives:

“1. Let us build a broad coalition against terrorism, recognising its links to migration. We need to establish a broad consensus on terrorism, recognising the fact that terrorism is a threat to humanity.

  1. One of its elements, compulsory resettlement, has already failed. Stop illegal migration at the external borders and deliver aid through a targeted, controlled development policy.
  2. Help Ukraine, but stop the failed sanctions policy. Urge a ceasefire and peace talks as soon as possible.
  3. Let’s rebuild Europe’s competitiveness instead of ideology-based economic policy. Let’s tailor the green transition, energy and trade policies to this end. Free SMEs from bureaucratic burdens.
  4. The Commission should not discriminate between Member States in the Single Market, nor withhold recovery and cohesion funds for political reasons. It is unacceptable that five Member States have not received a single euro cent.”

Finally, she asked the Commission to “not serve the will of third countries, but the interests of European people and companies. We have little time left to put Europe on the right track. Let this not be a mandate of wasted opportunities.”
