Tribute to the Roma victims of the Holocaust

2023. 01. 30.

On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a commemoration was held in Brussels in honour of the Roma victims of the Holocaust. The main patrons of the evening were Dr. Tamas Ivan Kovacs, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of Hungary (Kingdom of Belgium, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg) and Livia Jaroka, a non-attached Member of the European Parliament from Fidesz. In relation to the event, MEP Jaroka highlighted: what happened in Europe in the 1940s was not without precedent.

“Decades, even centuries, of internal anger fuelled the violence that eventually culminated in the Holocaust. However, many forms of unlawful discrimination, exclusion and persecution based on race, language or other characteristics still live with us today” she emphasized. She added: “our task is to learn from the horrors of the past and raise our voice in every situation when anyone would like to legitimize this violence. We must know, every single step on this road can be fatal.”

At the commemoration, the artists of the Sárközi Gyula Company and the students of the Madách Dancing School presented a joint ballet performance titled “HABISZTI – simply for that, we live and dance!”.
