The European Commission must end the exclusion of Hungarian students from the Erasmus+ programme!

The European Parliament held a debate on the occasion of the International Day of Education concerning the fight against inequalities in access to education. In her speech, Annamária Vicsek, a Fidesz MEP and member of the Patriots for Europe Group, highlighted that equal access to education is often treated as a global problem, although it is a real problem in the European Union as well.

“On the occasion of the International Day of Education, we must say: education is not a privilege but a fundamental right which should be accessible to everyone, without restrictions or discrimination. We often treat it as a global problem and identify it with the poorest regions of the world. Yet it also exists in Europe today – not because of poverty, but because of political exclusion. The unlawful exclusion of Hungarian students from the Erasmus+ programme in 2022 made this painfully clear,” said the Fidesz politician.

“When access to such programmes is restricted for political reasons, it is not just student mobility that is harmed. The right to education, the principle of equal treatment and the European promise to leave no student behind are also violated. On the International Day of Education, I therefore call on the Commission to restore full access to the Erasmus+ programme for Hungarian students as soon as possible and to ensure that all students can study and develop under equal conditions in the European Union,” Vicsek added.
