The double game of the European Parliament

2023. 02. 07.

Today, the plenary session of the European Parliament voted on two important issues in the field of labour law: the improvement of the working conditions of platform-based work and the revision of the Directive on European Works Councils. Fidesz MEP Ádám Kósa stated that the left is playing a two-faced game: while in the case of platform workers they want to ensure that only a narrow circle of MEPs decide on a very important file, they are over-extending their powers in relation to the European Works Councils.

The services provided with the help of various digital platforms and applications provide income for many people in Hungary today. MEP Kósa emphasized: “It is beyond dispute that platform employees also have the right to healthy and safe working conditions, social care, further training, as well as fair and transparent working conditions.” The MEP stated: “However, the line is thin: on the one hand, the flexibility that makes the platform work attractive must not be lost, and on the other hand, people who are actually employed as employees must not be deprived of the rights provided by the Labor Code.” Kósa pointed out: “The Fidesz Delegation to the European Parliament voted for the plenary session of the EP to have the final say on this important topic, that is, it requested that not only the 55 members of the Employment and Social Committee, but all 705 MEPs participate in the finalization of the text.”

MEP Ádám Kósa said in connection with the vote on the European Works Councils: “The current directive works relatively well, although of course it is not flawless. There is no doubt that the current legislative framework can be refined, however, it is not the task of the EP to initiate legislation, which is why the Fidesz MEPs abstained from voting.”
