The Czech Presidency must focus on energy security

2022. 07. 06.

“The Czech presidency takes over the leadership of the EU at a moment when we are facing economic and security challenges unprecedented for decades”, Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi stressed during the debate on the Czech EU Presidency programme in the European Parliament.

MEP Balázs Hidvéghi underlined that the European Union is facing an economic recession and an energy crisis, while the eastern Member States have to deal with the biggest refugee crisis in their history.

He added that the Czech presidency’s focus on security of supply is a cause for optimism since energy supply is not an ideological but a physical issue: either you have energy or you don’t. “And people in Europe would like to wash, do the washing, heat and travel”, MEP Hidvéghi pointed out.

The MEP said that in the current situation, the European Union cannot allow for division or engage in unnecessary internal disputes. Therefore, he called on the Czech presidency to facilitate access to EU funds for Hungary and Poland.
