Today, the European Parliament (EP) adopted, by a large majority, the report by Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth containing the resolution of the Committee on Environment on the ban of misleading environmental claims and labelling, i.e. ‘greenwashing’. The adoption of the report is a great success for the Fidesz EP delegation, as this proposal will provide consumers with effective tools to avoid the harmful practice of dual quality and to increase the sustainability of products and our economy.
In her plenary speech, MEP Edina Tóth pointed out that the phenomenon of ‘greenwashing’ has become more prevalent recently, which is why it is particularly important to fight against this harmful practice. “We will no longer give space to companies that claim to be environmentally friendly when this is not at all evident in their operations or when such misleading claims about their products and services cannot be substantiated”, she added.
According to the Fidesz MEP, effective regulation can strengthen the credibility of any genuine company’s greening in order to boost consumer confidence. “Green products should be truly green. Let’s continue together on the green path, and let’s eliminate bad trade practices that are harmful to consumers”, concluded MEP Edina Tóth.
