The European Parliament has adopted a resolution on truck parking safety. In 2018, Fidesz MEP Ádám Kósa drew attention to the fact that there are too few guarded parking spaces on Europe’s roads, which could lead to serious problems. MEP Andor Deli reminded that the construction of secure and guarded parking facilities requires a huge financial investment, which can be remedied by linking different infrastructure developments. He stressed that it was the European Commission’s task to coordinate and provide the financial backing for the development of the Member States.
MEP Kósa said: “Poor rest conditions and the high risk of crime and assault are reducing the attractiveness of the driving profession, even though the shortage of drivers is becoming more and more noticeable”. “The solution could be the application of a harmonised EU standard that would clearly define the mandatory safety and comfort levels for truck parking. This would avoid tragedies such as the death of the Romanian lorry driver who was killed by criminal gangs while on the job in France in May this year”, he recalled.
“The construction of parking areas must be coordinated with other objectives, such as the construction of alternative fuel infrastructure. This would be a more efficient way of achieving the objectives set and would reduce the cost of the investments”, stressed MEP Andor Deli. “The review of the regulation of the trans-European transport networks is also a good opportunity to do so”, he added.
