“The European Commission should not stab Hungary in the back, but should finally reimburse the expenses regarding our border police measures. Instead of ostrich politics, Brussels should finally support the Member States protecting their external borders in their efforts to fight illegal migration in the interests of the security of the EU as a whole”, said MEP Kinga Gál, Chair of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament, during a debate on asylum and migration in Brussels.
In the context of the extraordinary meeting of the European Council in February, a debate on developing sustainable solutions in the field of asylum and migration was held today in Brussels at the plenary session of the European Parliament. During the debate, MEP Kinga Gál stressed that the migratory pressure on the EU’s external borders is aggressive and is increasing at an alarming rate, with regular incidents of violence against border guards near the Serbian border on the Western Balkan migration route. She added that the only solution is to protect the external EU borders and stop illegal migration. “This is why proposals that still seek to harbour illegal immigration rather than stop it are harmful. A distribution system based on solidarity is an incentive for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants and criminal organisations that smuggle people”, she added.
“It is now clear that the EU asylum system has failed, and Member States are taking action themselves to curb illegal migration”, said MEP Kinga Gál. “Despite the sacrifices Hungary has made in order to protect our common external borders, it has so far only received backstabbing from Brussels. The European Commission must finally reimburse Hungary for the money it has spent on border management measures, thus supporting the Member States protecting their external borders for the efforts they make to ensure the security of the Union as a whole”, the President of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament stressed.
