Today, the European Parliament adopts a new resolution on the tragic war in Ukraine, the result of Russian military aggression against the country initiated a year ago. The Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament is on the side of peace, because we are convinced that a ceasefire and the start of peace negotiations will lead to the saving of human lives. Hungary is providing the largest humanitarian aid operation in its history since the outbreak of the war and is prepared to make further sacrifices to help Ukraine. At the same time, we cannot accept the further imposition of energy sanctions that are destroying European economies.
Today, the European Parliament adopts a new resolution on the Russian war against Ukraine, launched a year ago on February 24, 2022. The position of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament, in line with the Hungarian government, has been clear and unequivocal since the beginning of the war: we are on the side of the attacked and condemn Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine. Accordingly, Hungary is providing the largest humanitarian aid package in its history to Ukraine. Hungary has already taken in more than one million refugees and is ready to provide further financial and humanitarian assistance.
But saving lives requires peace and a ceasefire. The Brussels response to the war is a misguided one, and the damaging consequences of sanctions are there for all to see: there is an energy crisis, energy prices are out of control, and inflation is running rampant. It is not right for European citizens to pay the price of war.
At the same time, we must not allow ourselves to get bogged down in the situation and turn solidarity with Ukraine and the people of Ukraine, who are living through a terrible war ordeal, into an empty phrase. We must do everything we can for peace!
That is why we are convinced that the adoption of the resolution before the European Parliament is a dead-end street: further energy sanctions are fatal for Europe’s economy and will not lead to peace in the near future. Therefore, the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament will not be taking part in the plenary vote on the resolution. The solution to war is peace.
