Press Release by MEP Enikő Győri
In a comment on the debate of the Finnish Presidency program, Fidesz MEP Enikő Győri asked Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne to endeavor to preserve the unity of the Union, as Ursula von der Leyen, the new President of the European Commission has also called upon. Győri emphasized that double standards should be avoided and a policy capable of erasing the divisions that have grown deeper over the past five years, must be pursued.
“When you promise a strict examination of rule of law, be careful to apply it universally. It should not be allowed to happen that something that is common practice in the West, is deemed unwanted in Central Europe. Make sure to always be impartial and informed before you make a judgement. This is what the President’s ’honest broker’ role requires,” said the Fidesz MEP in her written statement.
Enikő Győri pointed out that the rule of law should be built upon stable legal foundations. Potential punitive measures should be impartial and should not serve to punish cohesion fund recipient countries. “Cooperation between Member States and with EU institutions should be characterized by mutual trust and cooperation, not by accusations. Only then will the Finnish Presidency succeed,” said the EPP Group politician.
