Migration endangers transporters

2016. 04. 15.

The migration crisis has produced serious consequences for European economies, foremost among them, new costs and delays affecting the transportation sector. Freight and passenger transport companies, only now rebounding from the economic crisis and braving stiff competition, have a new problem: the consequences of migration.

Transportation companies increasingly are being burdened with substantial losses due to frequent and stricter border controls. Their revenue is shrinking as fewer goods enter the market over the same period. Business costs have multiplied as a result of lengthier travel times, journeys becoming harder to plan and time-sensitive shipments jeopardized by longer journeys. Fidesz MEP Deli emphasized: “In order to preserve the common internal market, the efficient operation of the Schengen system is essential.”

The European road network is the truck drivers’ workplace, with all its challenges and dangers. It is essential that, in accordance with the Workplace Health and Safety Directive, the occupational health and safety of professional drivers should be ensured. “Truck drivers are especially at risk. They must surmount even bigger challenges than before. In their case, occupational health and safety takes a new meaning and is quite important,” Andor Deli pointed out in his address at the plenary.

The European People’s Party politician also outlined the problems affecting tourism and possible solutions: “We shouldn’t forget about tourism, because terrorist attacks and threats affect the sector especially hard. It’s very important to construct a support mechanism that makes it possible for transport companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as those in the tourism sector to recoup their losses,” he said.
