MEP Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield has become unworthy and unfit to hold the post of EP rapporteur for Hungary – letter to EP President Roberta Metsola

2023. 02. 09.

Honourable Madam President,

At this week’s conference in Brussels entitled ‘Cities for the Rule of Law’, our fellow MEP Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield has made an unprecedented, scandalous statement about Hungary. According to press reports, she claimed nothing less than that “agencies of the Hungarian government, the secret services, are leaking to the Russians”. See the relevant section of her speech below:

I would like to address the geopolitical situation within which Hungary poses a specific threat today. This is not just about political infighting. I don’t understand why other Member States in the European Council are not reacting. It is a real threat. Why? First of all, because there is a place, Budapest, where Russian influence still exists. This, of course, has nothing to do with the city’s administration. We have known for years that government agencies, the secret services have been leaking to the Russians.”

We have already seen countless examples of ideologically biased slanders and lies that bear no relation to reality in the resolutions of the European Parliament on Hungary. At the same time, it is an unprecedented diplomatic and security policy scandal, which goes far beyond the rules of politics, to claim such slander and lie, at a public event, that a NATO and EU Member State is leaking to a country that is at war. A more outrageous blood libel cannot be made in public life. To make matters worse, on the following day of the conference, the person concerned was herself forced to admit that she had made an untrue statement.

Of course, it may appear as if we are addressing you because of the political differences between the honourable Member and ourselves, but the above case is an apparent example of blatant slander and political dilettantism that cannot be allowed to go unchallenged. The European Parliament can no longer be an institution without consequences.

In view of the fact that MEP Delbos-Corfield’s scandalous statement above clearly makes her unworthy and unfit to hold the post of EP rapporteur for Hungary, we call for her immediate dismissal from the position. We call on Madam President to take the necessary steps to ensure that MEP Delbos-Corfield is immediately removed from her post as rapporteur for Hungary.

Sincerely yours,

Kinga Gál MEP
