It is unacceptable that the left in the European Parliament is attacking Hungary again

2024. 07. 19.

“It is unacceptable that the left in the European Parliament, in today’s resolution on Ukraine, is once again attacking Hungary and the Hungarian Prime Minister. In their biased war advocacy, they criticize Viktor Orbán more than the Russian aggressor,” said MEP Kinga Gál, President of the Fidesz delegation in the European Parliament, regarding today’s Ukraine resolution.

MEP Kinga Gál, first vice-chair of the Patriots for Europe faction, stated: the text attacks Hungary and Viktor Orbán on several points for their pro-peace stance and is full of pro-war declarations that threaten escalation.

“A new term, the same old tune. The European, war-advocating left has launched another attack against Hungary because we stand for peace. However, they have raised the stakes: they now demand the deployment of Western weapons against Russian territories. This would openly bring war upon us. We demand the cessation of killing and destruction, an immediate ceasefire, and peace negotiations,” said the MEP.

MEP Kinga Gál added that, on behalf of the Patriots for Europe faction, they submitted an alternative resolution proposal that urges diplomatic efforts and emphasizes the importance of peace. It also calls on Ukraine to respect the rights of national minorities and to fulfill their commitments in this regard.

Fidesz-KDNP MEP Viktória Ferenc from Transcarpathia, highlighted that Hungary continuously supports Ukraine, whether in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic or the hardships of war. She emphasized: “With the outbreak of war, the people of Ukraine are experiencing immense suffering, and the number of human casualties is increasing. The recent severe attack on the children’s ward of the Okhmatdyt hospital in Kyiv is particularly shocking, as it claimed innocent civilian lives. This violence must end as soon as possible, and a ceasefire and peace negotiations are needed. The daily lives of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia are made even more difficult by the restrictions on their minority rights, in addition to the suffering caused by the war. Therefore, it is essential that the legal status of national minorities is settled in the process of Ukraine’s EU accession.”
