Hungary Does Its Homework

“The housing crisis varies from region to region, but it poses a serious challenge across Europe,” said György Hölvényi, KDNP Member of the European Parliament, in Strasbourg during the plenary debate on affordable housing. In his view, success depends on all 27 EU governments doing their homework, as housing remains a competence for Member States.

György Hölvényi pointed out that Hungary is acting responsibly in this area and is supporting families while making significant economic sacrifices. Hungary allocates approximately 5 percent of its GDP to family support, as a result of which more than 250,000 families have been able to acquire their own homes.

The MEP recalled that under the new home creation program, the Hungarian government provides a fixed, 3 percent interest loan for first-time home buyers. “Within just a few months, this has made home ownership possible for 40,000 young people,” he added.

According to György Hölvényi, Hungary has chosen an independent path that is contrary to the strategies of several Western European countries: it builds on supporting families and internal resources, and under no circumstances does Hungary intend to support illegal migration or pass on to the Hungarian people the housing problems arising from it, which are now clearly visible elsewhere.

Finally, the MEP emphasized that European solutions must serve the interests of European citizens. “We can only hope that the European Commission, instead of directly or indirectly supporting illegal migration, will be capable of providing real assistance to European citizens,” he concluded.
