Briefing by MEP Edina Tóth
The European Parliament held a debate on 800 customer service numbers this afternoon. On the topic, Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth stressed the importance of the EU-wide standardisation of the service number.
In her written remarks, the EPP Group MEP welcomed the EU-wide introduction of the emergency number 112 for a proper single market in telecommunications and the respect of rights of European citizens in emergency. This, however, is not a full harmonization considering that the 800-toll free service number cannot be used in cross-border calls within the EU.
The Fidesz politician emphasized that it was time to allow family members of hospital patients to call and request information about health condition of their relatives in a fast and simple manner. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce 800 toll free customer service number all over the EU.
