Harmful Brussels sanctions must be abolished

2022. 12. 19.

The European Parliament held a debate in preparation for the European Council meeting on December 15. In his speech, MEP Tamás Deutsch, head of the Fidesz delegation in the European Parliament, stressed that Brussels’ promises on sanctions have not been fulfilled and that Europe has shot itself in the foot with energy sanctions. He called for the harmful sanctions to be abolished.

MEP Tamás Deutsch pointed out that in the third quarter of the year, the GDP in eight European Member States had decreased compared to the previous quarter, and industrial production fell in 14 countries in September. According to a survey by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, 8% of German industrialists are planning to relocate production outside Europe because of unbearably high energy prices. The Economist reported that the energy crisis is not over, with gas prices still six times the long-term average. In fact, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a press conference that we could face a gas shortage of up to 30 billion cubic meters next year. What we see, therefore, is that it is no longer just the fact that prices are sky-high that is causing serious problems but also the question of whether there will be any gas at all next year.

MEP Tamás Deutsch pointed out that Brussels’ promises have not been kept. The sanctions imposed on Russia have not brought an end to the war in Ukraine; the people of Europe are poorer, and European economies are slowly being brought to their knees.

The head of the delegation stressed that the harmful sanctions imposed by Brussels must be abolished.
