On Wednesday’s plenary session, the European Parliament (EP) prepared the summit of EU heads of state and government. Over the next two days, European leaders will have to decide on strategic issues such as the fight against the coronavirus, economic recovery or migration. Nevertheless, the left-wing majority in the EP used the debate to launch another political attack on Hungary over the law on pedophilia and child protection. In her plenary speech, MEP Enikő Győri called on her fellow MEPs to read the Hungarian law before forming a political opinion.
In her plenary speech, MEP Enikő Győri pointed out: “The statements made in this House in today’s debate from governments and other institutions are sad and shameful because they are based on misstatements. The recently adopted Hungarian law protects the rights of children, guarantees the rights of parents and does not apply to the rights of persons over 18 years of age related to sexual orientation. As such, it does not contain any discriminatory elements.
The Hungarian politician underlined: “Hungarian law is based on Article 14 (3) of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. Under this provision of the Charter, the right of parents to provide for the education of their children in accordance with their religion, worldview or pedagogical convictions must be respected. Hands off our children!” concluded the Hungarian politician.
