Press Release by MEP Edina Tóth

The European Parliament discussed the Commission’s proposal on establishing the Just Transition Fund. Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth welcomed the European Council’s decision from December 2019  to target climate neutrality by 2050. At the same time, MEP Tóth expressed the importance of being prepared for the transition that will create significant economic and social changes which cost more and need additional investments.

The EPP politician emphasized in her remarks: „The Just Transition Fund shall be designed so that it does not result in increased energy and food prices. Nevertheless, no Member State or region should be left behind; the transition has to be a socially just”.

The Hungarian Fidesz-KDNP delegation fully agrees with the EPP Group’s standpoint that fresh money is needed to achieve new objectives. “Whilst establishing the Just Transition Fund, no sources should be allocated from the budget of traditional EU policies such as the Cohesion Fund or Common Agriculture Policy. We need fresh money beyond the multi-annual budgetary framework”, highlighted Edina Tóth.

“We shall not limit the scope of financial support to only those Member States in which coal phase-out causes serious problems”, concluded her speech the Fidesz politician.
