Great Hungarian successes in the Romanian municipal elections

2020. 10. 01.

The Fidesz-KDNP Delegation congratulates the Transylvanian Hungarians on their historic success in the Romanian municipal elections. Thanks to the persistent work of the Hungarian parties in Transylvania, after 20 years, a Hungarian mayor could have been elected in Târgu Mureş, Zoltán Soós.

Candidates from the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) were elected to mayoral positions in 199 places, and they were able to increase the number of their local councilors in several places, such as Sfântu Gheorghe, Târgu Secuiesc, the Covasna County Council, Miercurea Ciuc, Satu Mare or the Satu Mare County Council. County councilors re-elected in the colors of the RMDSZ can continue their work in Covasna, Harghita, Mureş and Satu Mare counties. In addition, in some Romanian-majority settlements, RMDSZ candidates also became mayors, such as in Reghin, Comuna Baciu and Ghimeș-Făget.

The Hungarian Transylvanian Association (EMSZ), established as a cooperation between the Hungarian People’s Party of Transylvania (EMNP) and the Hungarian Civic Party (MPP), was able to repeat its results from four years ago. EMSZ candidates were elected mayors in ten places, and three more independent candidates who they supported also won on Sunday.

The Fidesz-KDNP Delegation to the European Parliament consistently advocates for the individual and community rights of Hungarians abroad, in close cooperation with the parties of Hungarian communities beyond our borders. That is why we are especially pleased with the great success of the Hungarians in the Romanian municipal elections. Congratulations and we look forward to working together in the future too!
