Frontex: We expect more funds to cover costs of external border protection!

Press release by MEP Kinga Gál

On Wednesday, the European Parliament voted on the draft regulation strengthening the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex). If properly implemented, the regulation will help protect the Union’s external borders. However, in fact, it would be most necessary for the Union to provide significant financial support to pay for the border protection efforts of Member States that effectively protect the external borders of the EU, such as Hungary,” said Fidesz MEP Kinga Gál.

The primary objective of the Hungarian government has always been to strengthen border protection. At the EU level, it is necessary to increase border protection efforts, but the expansion of the capacity of Frontex alone will not achieve the desired goal.

“We have borne the brunt of external border protection,” Kinga Gál said, “we have built a fence, trained and deployed three thousand border guards. This is how we protected Europe, but we have not received any EU support so far. This is why we expect the EU to reimburse our expenditure on external border protection.”
