Every Day, Let’s Act for People with Disabilities!

2024. 12. 04.

Today is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and on this occasion, the European Parliament provides various political forums for discussing their situation. Fidesz MEP, Pál Szekeres, a member of the Patriots group, emphasized: “It is important that the challenges faced by people with disabilities are not only highlighted on a single World Day and not just this week. Their situation requires a horizontal approach, and it is essential to ensure that their rights are effectively upheld in all areas. It is a fact that the European Commission’s package on independent living takes into account some of their needs, but it is disappointing that, unlike in the past five years, their case is no longer represented by a dedicated commissioner.”

In honor of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the European Parliament is holding numerous events this week: conferences, workshops, and public hearings organized by 11 different committees. Pál Szekeres said: “It is the right approach to address the rights of people with disabilities in such a comprehensive way. Only with a horizontal approach can we improve their situation. It is essential that we take their rights into account in every area, whether it is about moving from large institutions to smaller communities, employment, women’s rights, education, or even how digitalization and artificial intelligence can help remove barriers.”

He added: “However, it is important that the challenges faced by people with disabilities are not only given attention on a single World Day or during this week. It should be natural that in our decision-making, we consider how we can help people with disabilities to live independently and successfully in their workplace, their community, and their home, and lead a fulfilling life without barriers.”
