The summit of EU Heads of State and Government begins in Brussels today. European leaders will make strategic decisions on issues such as the fight against the coronavirus, economic recovery or migration. MEP Enikő Győri commented: If the EU is not able to ensure the health, safety and well-being of Europeans, there will be no future for Europe. In connection to the topic of migration, MEP Balázs Hidvéghi added: dictates cannot be imposed on Member States, every country has the right to decide who is allowed to enter its territory.
MEP Enikő Győri emphasized: “European citizens clearly see that the procurement of vaccines in the EU was slow, the governments of the member states could act more effectively if they wanted to. In Hungary the ratio of people vaccinated is one of the highest in the EU because we did not make an ideological question out of it. This allowed life and the economy to start again sooner. Thanks to this, we can see full-fledged football matches in Budapest”.
Regarding economic recovery, the Fidesz MEP emphasized: “The Commission can help the recovery by approving national recovery plans as soon as possible, adapting to the needs of countries, without double standards and ideological considerations. I ask those who are happy about the global minimum tax, to count, because, it is suspicious that giant tech companies can get away again with paying a fair tax. Tax havens should not be confused with tax systems based on real competition. This would ultimately hit our citizens with higher taxes, worsen competitiveness and slow down the recovery, and is therefore against the interests of Europe. “
MEP Enikő Győri highlighted: “At the same time, we have not left the crises behind. Again, many are trying to enter the continent illegally. We need to be able to protect our external borders and build strong partnerships in the Mediterranean basin from Turkey to Morocco. Those in need should get help where they are, the solution is not to lure them to Europe together with their problems. Moreover, the ongoing braindrain is downright immoral.”
Regarding the issue of migration, Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi said that it’s about time for the European Union to stop forcing bad solutions. “Ever since the 2015 crisis, it is clear that the relocation of migrants is a dead end. This approach is fundamentally flawed, as it creates a significant pull factor to illegal migration into the EU,” said the MEP. He added that when it comes to migration, dictates cannot be imposed on Member States, and that each country has the right to decide who can enter its territory.
