EU-Mercosur trade agreement: Protection of Hungarian producers must be guaranteed

2019. 07. 25.

Press Release by MEP Balázs Hidvéghi

“It is important for Hungarian farmers that the European Union concludes bilateral agreements that do not create double standards but provide protection for domestic producers,” said Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi in Brussels. The member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI) took part in a meeting on Wednesday where EPP Group members of the committee discussed current agricultural issues with representatives of the European Commission.

“It is unacceptable that the expectations of Hungarian farmers are being pushed aside. Agricultural products flowing in from overseas and the planned cuts in agricultural subsidies threaten the interests of Hungary’s agricultural sector. Hungarian farmers expect us to act in their best interests,” said Hidvéghi in his remarks.

“While the creation of the 1 billion euros financial security framework announced by Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan is positive, we do not see the exact outline yet. It is important that farmers know when and under what conditions this financial framework could be used,” said Balázs Hidvéghi.
