The European Parliament adopted a resolution on European Citizens’ Initiative entitled “End the cage age”. The European Union is a world leader in animal welfare regulation. „However, we cannot create rules that make food more expensive and ruin our farmers,” said Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi.
The European Parliament voted on the “End the cage age”, a European Citizens’ Initiative on cage farming. The proposal would completely end cage farming in the EU by 2027. MEP Balázs Hidvéghi pointed out that in 2012, when only enriched cages were imposed, a range of family farms were ruined, and food prices rose sharply. „There is no question about it: a complete ban on cages would have even more serious consequences,” the Fidesz MEP added.
MEP Hidvéghi stressed that „Animal welfare is important to all of us. But we can only set new rules that do not endanger the livelihoods of European farmers and the food supply of the people living here”.
