Chaos at the airports: we need fast, efficient, and consumer-friendly EU measures!

2022. 12. 13.

In yesterday’s plenary session, the European Parliament discussed the persistent challenges in air transport and the possibility of dealing with their impact on passengers, workers, and safety. Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth pointed out that it was time that the EU institutions finally dealt with the permanent chaos at airports and in air transport, which mainly affects passengers. Fidesz MEP Enikő Győri  called on the Commission to create a transparent and easily accessible European claim enforcement system.

MEP Enikő Győri stated: “In the summer, when delays, flight cancellations, endless waiting times, piles of suitcases, and uncertainty ruled the airports, 46 of my fellow MEPs and I addressed a question requiring a written answer to the Commission. The Commission gave an evasive answer and deflected the issue, pointing to the national authorities when we asked how it implements the relevant EU legislation regarding airlines. The Commission usually has no problem overstepping its competencies, but this time, they were quick to use this as an excuse. There is no point in having European legislation if the airlines find loopholes.”

MEP Edina Tóth emphasized the importance of proper implementation. “It is important that the EU rules do not just remain empty promises but are also effectively implemented. If that is not possible, then we need to develop better legislation. We need quick, efficient action at the EU level that focuses on the interests of consumers!”
