Social inclusion of people with disabilities: a sustainable investment

The inclusion of 80 million people with disabilities in the European Union, 16% of its population, is of utmost importance for creating a more active and sustainable ageing society in Europe. Making efforts, rather than promises, to actually achieve their inclusion socially and in the labour market offers a previously neglected opportunity for meeting and understanding Europe's future workforce needs. Apart from migration, people with disabilities and elderly people could be a real answer to the general shortage in the active and working population. Amongst others, this is one of the main goals of EPP Group MEP Ádám Kósa's proposals, which will be voted on in the European Parliament this month.

Marginalized groups could contribute to revitalize European economy

The prestigious organization "Friends of Europe" along with Financial Times and the Polish EU Presidency organized a roundtable discussion titled "State of Europe - Re-thinking the European Project". In her speech, Hungarian MEP Lívia Járóka urged the community-level treatment of social tensions which are currently threatening with the disruption of social cohesion. She also highlighted that crisis-management should not overshadow anti-poverty measures, indispensable for Europe's socio-economic prosperity.

European Citizens’ Initiative in the sake of women’s rights

Femmes d’Europe, a Belgian association promoting women's rights organized a conference today in the European Parliament to discuss the European Citizens' Initiative, an instrument introduced by the Treaty of Lisbon. In her speech Lívia Járóka, Chairwoman of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality recommended to initiate legislation on policy fields such as the reconciliation of work and family life or improving the situation of Roma women, where there is still a room for improvement despite the undeniable achievements of the EU regarding gender equality.

Ádám Kósa MEP and Marian-Jean Marinescu MEP - A proposal by EPP Group MEPs Ádám Kósa, the only deaf MEP in the European Parliament, and Marian-Jean Marinescu, Vice-Chairman of the EPP Group, concerning equal access for people with disabilites to emergency services has been presented to Parliament. The aim of the Written Declaration launched this week is to grant full access to the standardised European emergency number 112 for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, as well as people with speaking disabilities.
