EU Must Act to Protect Christian Minorities in the Middle East

The suffering and persecution of religious minorities in the Middle East calls for more decisive action at the EU level to provide more effective aid, say MEPs. In a meeting convened by MEP György Hölvényi, member of the European People’s Party Group responsible for inter-religious dialogue, along with Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and other EPP Group members agreed that EU institutions, especially the European Commission and Parliament, must be more effective in assisting those suffering religious-based persecution.

Tibor Navracsics: convincing and credible commitment to European values

"Tibor Navracsics clearly showed that he is a true European," said Sabine Verheyen, EPP Group Coordinator in the Culture and Education (CULT) Committee, right after the hearing of the Commissioner-Designate on Wednesday evening. "During the hearing and during prior bilateral meetings, he made clear that he is a competent candidate for this portfolio. His answers to the questions of MEPs and to those that were sent to him in written form prior to the hearing by the CULT Committee clearly indicated his proficiency for the post and that he is fully committed to European values and standards."

Hungarians in Transcarphatia need fair parlamentary representation

The European Union foresees the resolution of the Ukrainian domestic political crisis in the implementation of reform measures towards the democratic rule of law. The protection of national minorities and the respect of their rights shall be part of this process. Based on the decree of the Ukrainian President on the 27th of August 2014, the Central Election Commission announced the date and the district boundaries of the early parliamentary elections. The Hungarian EPP Group Delegation welcomes the elections, however it has to be stated that the decree deprives 150 thousand Transcarpathian Hungarians from the possibility of forming a parliamentary representation, thereby contradicts the Ukrainian election law.
