“It is not the sham measures of the European Parliament but the result of the 2024 European Parliament elections that will be the decisive answer to the eradication of corruption in Brussels”, said Fidesz MEPs on the European Parliament’s internal reform proposals, which were voted on today in the Strasbourg plenary session. They stressed that the EP proposals “scratch the surface” and do not contain any substantive response to the serious corruption scandal that has rocked Brussels.
Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi recalled that last December, the worst corruption scandal ever broke out in Brussels, during which the vice-president of the European Parliament and several other left-wing MEPs were taken away in handcuffs. “For months now, we have been witnessing a cover-up in Brussels, trying to sweep everything under the carpet”, the MEP said.
He added that the complete absurdity of the internal reform proposals is shown by the fact that the report was prepared by a parliamentary committee whose chair comes from the same Socialist party that was involved in the corruption scandal. “It is obvious that the beneficiaries of the corruption machine, the Brussels bureaucrats, do not want to dismantle this system, which is favourable to them”, Balázs Hidvéghi pointed out.
Fidesz MEP László Trócsányi pointed out, regarding one of the reform proposals to establish an EU ethics body that “the attempt to create an ethics body does not solve the problem that certain members of the European institutions have been involved in corruption scandals that have led to criminal proceedings. In cases of corruption in Brussels, it is a matter of criminal law, not ethics”. He made it clear that, given the importance of the issue, “it is for the Member States to define the standards of conduct for the European institutions”.
