Brussels’ War Agenda Seriously Jeopardises the Energy Security of Member States

Speaking during today’s plenary debate of the European Parliament, Enikő Győri, Fidesz Member of the European Parliament and economic spokesperson for the Patriots for Europe Group, warned that the European Union has turned against itself and become captive to a war mentality. Amid the war-driven rhetoric of the European Commission and NATO leaders, legislation is being forced through that would effectively block the import of Russian natural gas into the EU from next autumn. According to Fidesz MEP András László, energy sanctions have caused greater damage to the European economy than to Russia. “In Brussels, solidarity is preached day and night. Yet Brussels-style solidarity somehow never serves European citizens,” he said. The IMF estimates that the Hungarian economy would shrink by 4% if Hungary were forced to purchase gas and oil from sources other than Russia. Household utility costs would triple, and fuel prices would also surge.

“You want to undermine the secure and affordable energy supply of two Member States, Hungary and Slovakia, in the perceived interest of a third country. At the same time, Hungary provides 51% of Ukraine’s electricity supply, leaving no doubt about our solidarity,” Enikő Győri said. She warned that the Commission is attempting to sidestep the unanimity requirement laid down in the EU’s founding treaties by using legal manoeuvres and rebranding sanctions as a trade policy measure. “In doing so, you are violating the principle of sincere and loyal cooperation and the rule of law. This course of action is tearing the European Union apart,” she added.

Enikő Győri also warned that Member States refusing to comply are increasingly being subjected to open pressure from Brussels. Referring to the frozen Russian assets debate, she said: “They would treat Belgium the same way they have treated Hungary, demonstrating that the entire rule-of-law procedure is nothing more than political blackmail. Let there be no doubt: Hungary will not be brought to its knees,” she concluded.

András László added: “You are fully aware that energy prices in Europe are three to four times higher than in the United States or China, yet you continue to force through energy sanctions,” the MEP said. He continued: “This will devastate European families and European industry alike. Stop this now. If you bypass the veto, Ursula von der Leyen can prepare for yet another lawsuit,” András László concluded.
