Brussels must return to common sense and dialogue with Hungary

2022. 04. 06.

In Hungary, Christian-democratic, conservative, civic and patriotic politics have won a historic majority in the National Assembly. Subsequently, Brussels bureaucrats are rushing to announce the opening of a new procedure against Hungary: starvation. “However, even Brussels must accept the basic rules of democracy and should not meet the demands of the now-defeated Hungarian Left nor incite political warfare against Hungary, but return to common sense and dialogue”, MEP Tamás Deutsch, Head of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament, stressed at the European Parliament’s morning plenary session.

“The war in Ukraine is causing terrible human tragedies. We, Hungarians want to see an immediate end to the bloodshed, and we Hungarians are making every effort to help those fleeing the war”, Tamás Deutsch stressed in the EP debate on the European Council meeting at the end of March. “Hungarians have moved as one to help, and in recent weeks, we have already taken in almost 600,000 refugees and delivered huge aid consignments to Ukraine. This is the truth, even if many deliberately leave Hungary out of the list of countries hosting refugees as a part of petty political games”, the Head of the delegation said.

“Although we, Hungarians could not accept it, we are getting used to the fact that Brussels has been deliberately trying to harm Hungary for years for political and ideological reasons. This has been the Left’s political strategy, and the Brussels bureaucrats have joined them in this campaign. However, on Sunday, Hungarian citizens made a decision in the parliamentary elections, and this left-wing policy failed miserably. Never have we had such a mandate as we have now; we have gained a historic majority in the elections. Christian-democratic politics; conservative, civic politics; and patriotic politics have won in Hungary”, MEP Deutsch underlined.

“In the elections and the child protection referendum, Hungarians did not express an opinion that Brussels likes. This is why the Brussels bureaucrats pounced on Hungary immediately after the elections and announced the opening of a new proceeding yesterday. A new procedure, while war is raging in our neighbourhood and the unity of Europe is so paramount”, Deutsch said.

“Well, even in this situation, it is worth calling a spade a spade. The new procedure against Hungary announced yesterday has nothing to do with the rule of law. What is happening now is political punishment. ‘Member States like Poland and Hungary need to be starved of money’, the left all over Europe trumpeted, and Brussels announced yesterday that it would launch this long-demanded starvation procedure. Because that’s what it’s called: a starvation procedure”, he underlined.

“On the other hand, Brussels should also accept the basic rules of democracy and should not meet the demands of the defeated Hungarian Left or incite political warfare against Hungary, but should return to common sense and dialogue”, the Head of the delegation warned.
