The European Parliament adopted in plenary today a new EU law that exempts NGOs, activists and investigative journalists from legal liability if they claim that a case against them is an obstacle to their participation in public life. “The European Union, ostensibly to protect the interests of citizens, wants to dismantle the rule of law and create a system in which the people and organisations of the Soros network are above the law, a superior class”, warned Fidesz MEP Ernő Schaller-Baross.
Commenting on the new rule, MEP Schaller-Baross said that in practice, it leads to a cover-up of illegality if NGOs, self-appointed defenders, certain climate activists who cause serious economic damage and organisers of illegal migration are exempted from lawsuits against them simply because they infringe on their participation in public affairs.
“The new EU law also casts doubt on the ability of national courts to decide for themselves when a case can proceed and which party is right”, he added.
Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi stressed that the intention behind this is clearly to exempt the actors of the Soros network from the scope of the law. “They aim at allowing certain journalists and NGOs to do practically anything without consequences and without being held accountable. No one is above the law, including journalists and NGOs. Everyone must be subject to the same rules”, the MEP pointed out.
