Brussels continues to take no action against the use of toxic technologies

2023. 01. 31.

Learning from the case of Tisza cyanide pollution, the European Parliament called on the Commission to ban the use of extremely dangerous cyanide mining technologies in the EU. It has been more than ten years now. Fidesz MEP Edina Tóth drew attention to the irresponsible attitude of Brussels: “It has been more than two decades since the disaster that affected many Member States took place, but companies using dangerous technology can continue to undisturbedly operate because the Commission does not take steps in this matter”.

MEP Edina Tóth reminded us that 23 years ago, from a Romanian mining company’s facility, a large amount of cyanide wastewater spilled into the Tisza river, causing damage to the fauna in several Member States. “To date, there has not been a complete ban on cyanide mining technologies, even though this would be the only safe way to protect our water resources and ecosystems from contamination,” the MEP emphasized.

Therefore, on the occasion of the anniversary of this environmental disaster, I addressed a written question to the Commission, and I am looking forward to a reply from Brussels regarding the reasons for the delay. “Swift and decisive action is needed, as some companies are still considering open-pit mining projects, so the safety of our waters cannot be guaranteed without banning potentially dangerous mining technologies,” she added.
