American concerns swept under the rug – Freedom of speech in Brussels’ crosshairs!

The European Parliament’s Committee on the Internal Market held a debate regarding the global criticism of European digital services regulations. The starting point of the discussion was a report by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, which concluded that EU regulations have not promoted freedom of expression, but rather strengthened Brussels’ censorship. Instead of engaging in substantive dialogue, however, the EPP-leftist majority sought a prearranged “confirmation” of their own position, relying solely on the views of the U.S. opposition while ignoring critical perspectives. Ernő Schaller-Baross, Fidesz MEP and member of the Patriots for Europe group, called it shameful that pluralism and citizens’ opinions are no longer respected in Brussels.

According to Ernő Schaller-Baross, it is unacceptable that the Brussels elite, ignoring requests from right-wing MEPs, did not invite a single speaker associated with the Trump administration to the debate. Instead, participants were subjected to a one-sided outburst from a Democratic representative – all with the active assistance of the Tisza Party’s political group, the European People’s Party and left-wing groups. “This is not only unfair, but it also undermines trust in EU regulations and institutions,” – he added.

Regulation of the digital space must strive for impartiality. “Only by balancing freedom and responsibility can we ensure transparency in decision-making and safeguard citizens’ right to free expression,” – emphasized the Fidesz MEP.
