On Thursday, the European Parliament will vote in plenary on the current annual report on Serbia. Fidesz MEPs continue to fully support Serbia’s accession to the EU as soon as possible. However, the most recent annual report is unjustifiably more critical and unbalanced than the previous ones, which does not help the enlargement process and may hinder negotiations; Fidesz representatives therefore cannot support it.
The country report strikes a markedly one-sided and critical tone against Serbia, which has a right-wing conservative government. We can find in the report the well-known rhetoric of the biased left-liberal majority, which has been similarly used against Hungary and Poland as well. We are convinced that the European Parliament’s report on Serbia does not serve the speeding up of the accession process or the mutual respect and esteem between the EU and Serbia.
Serbia does not need ideological reports but professional and financial support in order to promptly catch up with the European Union. Therefore, the Fidesz Parliamentary Group in the European Parliament, as a sign of its solidarity with Serbia, will not be in favour of the EP’s report in Thursday’s vote.
