We say no to Brussels’ new overhead proposal!

2023. 05. 09.

The European Parliament (EP) today voted on its proposals to reduce methane emissions from the energy sector. According to Fidesz MEPs Edina Tóth and András Gyürk, the importance of reducing methane leakage is beyond debate, but the EP’s proposal would make it impossible to do so effectively: it threatens the security of energy supply, means higher costs, and increases the bureaucratic burden on businesses. The role of the EU’s flawed energy and climate policies in the energy price boom is inescapable, and this proposal will only make matters worse.

Speaking in last night’s debate, MEP Edina Tóth stressed that EU provisions to reduce methane emissions are important, but the proposals before us – especially in the energy crisis caused by Brussels sanctions and inflationary environment due to the war – do not take into account the specificities of Member States. “The reduction and metering measures being pushed by the left are excessively bureaucratic and could create a significant financial burden for companies and, by extension, for European families.” According to the Fidesz MEP, these ill-considered measures will not help but hinder methane reduction targets! “With its irresponsible and absurd idea, the Parliament would jeopardise the security of energy supply, cause overheads to rise, and put thousands of European jobs at risk”, she added.

According to MEP András Gyürk, families and businesses are facing unprecedented energy prices due to poorly designed sanctions and misguided energy policies in Brussels. But instead of providing help, Brussels and the left are thinking only in terms of new sanctions and ill-considered measures. “The European energy sector accounts for around 1% of global methane emissions. Therefore, real climate protection requires broad international cooperation based on mutual respect, rather than absurd and lecturing proposals. Methane leakages must be detected and stopped, but this can only be achieved by joining forces and working together”, underlined the Fidesz MEP.
